UK Law on eBikes

If you are looking to buy an eBike or eBike conversion kit, you need to be aware of the laws and regulations surrounding eBikes in the UK.

Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles or EAPCs are perfectly legal to ride in the UK without the need for to register, tax or insure the bike or need for the user to have licence. You can ride an EAPC wherever a standard bike is allowed, including cycle paths. You must be at least 14 years old to ride an eBike on the road. To be classified as an EAPC, the bike must:

  • Need pedalling to make the bike move
  • Have a maximum power output of 250W
  • Not provide electric assist over 25km or 15.5miles per hour

If the bike exceeds these limits, it is legally classified as a moped or motorcycle and is required to be registered with the DVLA, taxed and insured to be ridden on a public highway. The user must be at least 16 years old, have a driving license and wear a helmet.

Taking care of your eBike

Bike security is even more important for an eBike. Make sure you use a good quality lock, or ideally two, and to secure your bike whenever you park it. It is highly recommended to take out insurance to cover your eBike, this can be through an extension of your home contents insurance or through a separate policy offered by cycling organisations and bike shops. If you cycle into the city centre, why not try out the Secure Bike Park for just £1 a day!
