Types of Bike parking
Secure Bike Parking

Bike parking with controlled access which offers a high level of bike security. There is secure bike parking in Portal Precinct (off Sir Isaac’s Walk) and at Colchester Town Station where you can park your bike for the day for just £1.50!
Sheffield Stand

The most common type of bike parking consisting of an inverted U-shape piece of metal secured into the ground. These are good because they offer support for the bike frame and lots of space to lock to.
Stacked Parking

2 layers of bike parking stacked on top of each other which are often found around train stations. The top racks can be a bit more difficult to use, especially if you have a heavy bike.
Single Wheel Stand

A small loop to fit your wheel into and lock it to. This type of bike parking is not recommended to use because it does not offer support for the bike frame which can put pressure on the wheel. It is also difficult to lock the frame of the bike to the stand which can be a safety risk.
Vertical Rack

Often found inside secure bike parking and can be a bit more difficult to use if you have a heavy bike.
Lockers

Individual bike lockers for storing your bike undercover and out of sight. Please note, some bike lockers require you to bring your own lock for the front of the locker, so the security is only as good as your lock.
Best practice for securing your cycle:
  • Use 2 different Sold Secure gold standard locks
  • Lock at least the bike frame to the bike parking and lock both wheels as well if possible, remove any easily accessible accessories
  • Choose a location that is well lit, in a busy area and covered by CCTV
