29 and 30 August – Colchester Free Festival

Colchester’s Free Festival brings together the community in Colchester  to celebrate the towns culture, history and heritage. Over two days the festival showcases local music, arts and creative talent in an eclectic mix of performances, activities and interactive installations.

This year Cycle Colchester, CTC Cycle Champions, Sustrans, Colchester and Wivenhoe bike kitchens, plus others in the local cycling community are working with the festival organisers to put cycling at the heart of the festival.

The Free Festival will feature a large Cycle Town area in the middle of Castle Park, and every rider will get free cycle parking (bring a lock!). To reward those who cycle, we will also give a free prize draw ticket to win cycling goodies from Velo (ladies Kask helmet worth £125), Halfords voucher (£100) and Re-Cycle voucher (£75), plus a free smoothie and a free Dr Bike check.

Other stalls in the Cycle Town area will offer cycling information and maps, details of sponsored bike rides and advice on healthier lifestyles.

We will also be in the family area with our funky cycling glasses for the kids to decorate festival style. Come along by bike and enjoy a fantastic couple of days. We hope to see you at our Cycle Town.

Sustrans services to schools

With the start of a new academic year looming, could you encourage your school to promote sustainable travel for the journey to school? If so Sustrans are here to help and Aba Pifferi is your local Sustrans officer.

Sustrans can help you obtain your Green Flag or Eco Schools awards, work towards ModeShiftStars accreditation or support your participation in the Eco Race. The Eco Race is a score-based and easy to run FREE competition, which encourages pupils to record how they travel to school every day, three weeks per term, with those choosing active travel to school (cycling, walking and scooting) receiving higher scores. If you are interested contact Aba at aba.pifferi@sustrans.org.uk
